In the Sierra Nevada under dramatic stormy skies, a signed trail junction on the way to the top of Mt. Whitney on the John Muir Trail provides directions and multiple choices. It is at this point one can decide to go down the east side to the Whitney Portal, to go out and back to the top of My Whitney (the southern terminus of the John Muir Trail and the highest point in the contiguous Unites States), or head down the west side to the Crabtree Ranger station.
